Avoid it: If you need a figure in the middle. Use the donut for that.

How far along am I towards what I set out to do?
Avoid it: To compare categories with each other. A gauge shows one figure.
Bars
How much does each category have, and which one wins?
Avoid it: For parts of a total. There the comparison is against the whole.
Bar race
How did the ranking change over time?
Avoid it: If the order never changes. Then it is a plain bar chart with noise.
Globe
Where is it happening, geographically?
Avoid it: To compare figures precisely. Half the sphere faces away.
